Fumaric acid, Corydalis acid or lichenic acid, or fumaric acid, is a colorless, flammable crystalline carboxylic acid derived from butene. Its chemical formula is C4H4O4.

Burning fumaric acid releases irritating maleic anhydride smoke. It tastes like fruit and can be found in Corydalis, Boletus, lichens and Icelandic seaweed.

Function:

Fumaric acid is used to produce unsaturated polyester resin, which is characterized by good chemical corrosion resistance and heat resistance.

Copolymers of fumaric acid and vinyl acetate are good adhesives. Copolymers of fumaric acid and styrene are raw materials for making FRP. Plasticizers prepared by fumaric acid are non-toxic and can be used for vinyl acetate latex in food contact.

This product is a fine chemical intermediate such as medicine and optical bleaching agent. It is used in the production of antidote dimercaptosuccinic acid in the pharmaceutical industry. It neutralizes fumaric acid with sodium carbonate to get fumaric acid ([17013-01-3]), and then replaces it with ferrous sulfate to get ferric fumaric acid. It is a drug rich in blood iron for the treatment of small red blood cell anemia.

As a food additive, the product is used in refreshing beverages, fructose, jelly, ice cream, etc. It is mostly used with citric acid, monosodium salt made by reaction of fumaric acid and sodium hydroxide. It is also used as sour seasoning and intermediate of synthetic resin and mordant dyeing agent.
