The solid-state structural properties and phase transitionbehavior of 1,4-dibromo-2,3,?5,6-tetramethylbenzene CAS NO: 1646-54-4, demonstratingthat this material undergoes an order–disorder phase transitionbelow ambient temperature (at ca. 154 K on cooling and ca. 160 K onheating). In both the high-temperature and low-temperature phases,the crystal structure is based on π-stacking of the molecules.In the crystal structure of the high-temperature phase, the bromineoccupancy in each substituent site is ca. 1/3 and the methyl groupoccupancy in each substituent site is ca. 2/3, consistent with statisticalorientational disorder of the molecule between six distinct orientations. 

Natural-abundance solid-state 2H NMR spectroscopy confirmsthat, at ambient temperature, this disorderis dynamic via rapid molecularreorientation about an axis perpendicular to the aromatic ring. Inthe low-temperature phase, the bromine and methyl substituents occupypreferred sites within the crystal structure, with the distributionof site occupancies becoming progressively more ordered on decreasingtemperature. Solid-state structural studies show that1,4-dibromo-2,3, 5,6-tetramethylbenzeneundergoes CAS NO: 1646-54-4 an order disorder phase transition at ca. 154 K.In the high-temperature phase, bromine and methyl groups are distributedamong the six substituent sites with statistical occupancies; solid-state 2H NMR shows that this disorder is dynamic. In the low-temperaturephase, bromine and methyl groups occupy preferred sites, becomingprogressively more ordered as temperature decreases.
